Investigative Perceptions Explored at SUNY Canton’s Law Enforcement Day

Canton, NY (03/21/2017) — SUNY Canton’s seventh annual Law Enforcement Day will feature new crime scene investigation methodology and will show the limited-distribution documentary by a north country native filmmaker.

Law Enforcement Day 2017 is titled “Investigative Perceptions” and will begin at 9 a.m. Monday (March 27) in the college’s Kingston Theater. It is held by the college’s Criminal Investigation and Criminal Justice departments to highlight the latest trends and developments in the law enforcement industry. All sessions are free and open to the public, but are specifically designed for current and future police officers.

Feature presentations include:

  • A Victim Centered Death Investigations session will run from 9 to 11 a.m. with Laura G. Pettler, Ph.D., a noted authority on physical and behavioral evidence. Pettler is an expert on crime scene staging, or the manipulation of evidence to misdirect an investigation. The presentation will offer a step-by-step demonstration on how to identify, analyze, and evaluate homicide cases while preventing a case from going cold.
  • The keynote presentation will start at 1 p.m. and will include a screening of “Officer Involved,” an unreleased film exploring perspectives in contemporary American policing. The film’s director and Ogdensburg native Patrick Shaver will provide the introduction and will lead a conversation at the conclusion of the movie. Shaver documented the detailed perspectives of American police officers involved in shootings. Officer Involved was an official selection of the 2016 Knoxville Film Festival.

Criminal Justice, Criminal Investigation and related two- and four-year programs are among the most popular degrees offered at the college. SUNY Canton is also home to the state-certified David Sullivan-St. Lawrence County Law Enforcement Academy, which trains the majority of the North Country’s police force.
