SUNY Canton to Host EPA 608 Training and Certification in August

by Lorette Murray

Canton, NY (07/18/2024) — SUNY Canton's Center for Workforce, Community and Industry Partnerships and the Canino School of Engineering Technology will host a 10-hour Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 608 training course and certification exam for HVAC and refrigeration appliance technicians.

The training will be held from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5 and Tuesday, Aug. 6 in Nevaldine Hall, Room 115 (North). Parking is available in Lot 10B. It will be taught by Canino School of Engineering Technology faculty member Jay Simmons, who is a lecturer in the HVAC Engineering Technology and HVAC Trades programs.

An EPA 608 Technician Certification Exam will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12 (with a make-up exam option Aug. 13). The cost of both the training and exam is $150 per person.

EPA regulations under the Clean Air Act require that technicians who maintain, service, repair or dispose of equipment that could release ozone depleting refrigerants into the atmosphere must be certified. This requirement also applies to appliances containing most substitute refrigerants, including HFCs. Technicians are required to pass an EPA-approved test to earn Section 608 Technician Certification.
