SUNY Canton to Host Manufacturing Apprenticeship Roundtable for Employers

by Lorette Murray

Canton, NY (06/28/2024) — SUNY Canton's Center for Workforce, Community and Industry Partnerships (WCIP) and the Canino School of Engineering Technology will host a roundtable discussion for manufacturing industry representatives throughout the North Country to learn about apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship opportunities.

The event, organized by the New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL) and the State University of New York (SUNY), will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, July 22 in the Richard W. Miller Campus Center. Employers will learn about the college's role in the training process, and SUNY and NYSDOL representatives will discuss incentives for establishing apprenticeship programs.

"In the highly specialized world of advanced manufacturing, a well-trained workforce is critical to a company's success" said Dean of the Canino School of Engineering Technology Michael J. Newtown. "Apprenticeships equip students with the practical skills and knowledge that make them job-ready, and they fit perfectly within SUNY Canton's hands-on curriculum."

Employers that establish apprenticeships can benefit from hiring and retention incentives and tax credits. Applicable occupations include (but are not limited to) machinists (CNC), electro-mechanical technicians, quality assurance auditors, and manufacturing engineering technicians.

"This is a great opportunity for local employers to familiarize themselves with the benefits of establishing a pre-apprentice or apprenticeship program to upskill their existing workers and find new talent," said WCIP Executive Director Elizabeth A. Brown. "We welcome any area employer in the manufacturing field to join us."

For more information, or to register for the roundtable, contact SUNY Apprenticeship Business Developer Angelina Blank at (315) 514-2519 or angelina.blank@suny.edu.
