Two SUNY Canton Students Selected for Prestigious Chancellor's Scholarships

by Lorette Murray

Canton, NY (06/09/2020) — SUNY announced that two SUNY Canton students were chosen to receive the inaugural Chancellor's Undergraduate Scholarship and Graduate Fellowship award.

Sarah A. Atanasio of Pleasant Valley and Adam S. Petric of Toronto are among the 100 recipients across SUNY who received an award for the fall 2020 semester. The grants assist those who have obtained a SUNY associate or bachelor's degree and are continuing their education at a SUNY campus for either a bachelor's completion degree or graduate degree, respectively.

"We are immensely proud to recognize these exceptional students from across SUNY who have worked tirelessly to excel in their fields of study," said SUNY Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson. "They will no doubt inspire countless other students to pursue their educational path at SUNY, and in turn we will continue to provide access and opportunities to invest in tomorrow's innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders."

Atanasio received a $5,000 Graduate Fellowship award to continue her studies at SUNY Cortland in Athletic Training. She received a bachelor's degree in Health and Fitness Promotion from SUNY Canton in May 2020 and was a member of the women's soccer team.

"My ultimate goal is to make certain that any athlete I am privileged to train will gain knowledge and skill from me and bring those traits on to their next path, ultimately loving their sport more and more as they grow," Atanasio said.

Petric received the $3,000 Undergraduate Scholarship award to continue at SUNY Canton to receive a bachelor's degree in Management. He completed his associate degree in Business Administration in May 2020 and is a member of the men's ice hockey team.

"Obtaining a four-year degree is important to me as it is an essential part in being able to achieve my career goals," Petric said. "As I understand the significance of higher education in today's day and age, a bachelor's degree is the next step in my academic journey."

The scholarship program was announced in January 2020 by Johnson at the annual State of the University System address. Awards will be made as grants to defray room, board, books, technology, childcare or other eligible costs of attendance. This non-tuition scholarship is by nomination only and is open to all students, including out-of-state residents, international students, and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients who have maintained a GPA of 3.3 or higher and attend a SUNY institution.
