Recent SUNY Canton Graduate Receives Statewide University Police Award
Canton, NY (01/26/2024) — A former SUNY Canton University Police student dispatcher received the Dr. McBride Criminal Justice Student Achievement Award.
Tyler H. Fuentes of Monroe received the $1,000 award during a University Police awards ceremony held in December 2023 with SUNY Chancellor John B. King. Fuentes earned his four-year Homeland Security degree last semester.
"Tyler exemplifies the spirit of excellence in criminal justice," said University Police Chief Timothy Ashley, who attended the ceremony with Fuentes. "His commitment to service, quick thinking and compassion make him truly deserving of the Dr. McBride Criminal Justice Student Achievement Award."
In addition to his duties as a dispatcher, Fuentes was the President of the college's student-led EMS squad and responded to on-campus medical emergencies. He was also a volunteer EMT, a member of the Outdoor Adventure Club, and ran cross-country for the Roos during his time at the college.
"Tyler exhibits professionalism, excellent communication skills, good decision-making, and prioritization skills," said University Police Officer Tammy LePage-Avery, who nominated Fuentes for the award. "His dedication reflects the values we hold dear at SUNY Canton, and we are immensely proud of his accomplishments."
After graduating, Fuentes is currently using his EMS experience for a ski patrol position at the Mount Peter Ski Area in Warwick.
The Dr. McBride Criminal Justice Student Achievement Award is given in recognition of Dr. Bruce McBride, who was instrumental in departments' evolution from security services to SUNY University Police. McBride was also active in establishing the professional requirements for University Police officers that today remain among the highest and most respected in the country.
