Security Guard Training Classes Scheduled at SUNY Canton

Canton, NY (06/15/2026) — SUNY Canton will be offering State-required security guard training sessions from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on June 24 and 25 in Dana Hall, room 138 A.

Pre-assignment security guard training is the first step into the world of professional security. The 8-hour course presents the essentials every new guard needs to obtain a New York State license. Topics covered in this course include the role of the security guard, legal powers and limitations, emergencies, communications and public relations, access control, and ethics and conduct.

The training is presented by Lecturer Alan P. Mulkin, who teaches in the Criminal Justice program. Mulkin is the former University Police Chief and Canton Village Police Chief with nearly 40 years of police experience. He is an approved New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services security guard instructor.

The course costs $75 and space is limited. Potential attendees must preregister through the college's website.

There will be a second eight-hour pre-assignment training held on Oct. 12 and 13.

The college offers this training as a community service outreach to local agencies that employ security guards through the college's Center for Workforce, Community and Industry Partnerships (WCIP). The college also provides the state approved 90-day on the job training and the annual refresher course. Those in need of these trainings should contact the WCIP at wcip@canton.edu.
