SUNY Canton Announces Upcoming State Police Officer Training and Security Guard Training

Canton, NY (03/03/2026) — SUNY Canton will be offering New York State police officer civil service preparation and pre-employment security guard training courses this spring.

New York State Police Officer Civil Service Preparation

This free on-campus training will teach test-prep skills that culminate in a mock civil service exam. Participants will also take a mock NYS physical fitness test and learn ways to improve health and nutrition. Instruction will be led by SUNY Canton Law Enforcement Training Academy Director Joseph Brown, who will be assisted by SUNY Canton University Police Lt. Tyler Thomas.

"The civil service exam is necessary for employment in NYS as a municipal police officer and county deputy sheriff," said Brown. "This training can also assist participants with completing any state law enforcement civil service exam by learning tips and tricks to improve their score."

Dates and times are:

1-4 p.m. Saturday, March 21

5-7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from March 24 to April 30

1-4 p.m. Saturday, April 18

1-4 p.m. Saturday, May 2

"This type of preparation is often costly through other less in-depth programs, so I am excited to see this opportunity available locally," said Canton Village Police Chief and SUNY Canton alumnus Ryan Cole. "State law enforcement agencies are hiring at a higher rate than in past years, so I encourage everyone interested to take advantage of this course."

St. Lawrence County Chief Deputy Sheriff Leighton Filiatrault said, "We encourage individuals to take this opportunity to better prepare for upcoming civil service tests, because our office is always looking for qualified employees that are highly ranked on these exams."

Security Guard Training

This $75 training is required by New York State as the first step in obtaining a security guard registration card. The course provides attendees with a general overview of the duties and responsibilities of a security guard. It consists of two four-hour training blocks from 4-8 p.m. Monday, April 13 and Wednesday, April 15.

Topics covered include the role of the security guard, legal powers and limitations, emergency situations, communications and public relations, access control, ethics and conduct. For more information and to register, visit https://www.canton.edu/wcip/noncredit/security/pre/.

SUNY Canton Professor of Practice for the Center for Criminal Justice, Intelligence and Cybersecurity Alan P. Mulkin will lead the training. Mulkin has 40 years of police experience and is a New York State-approved security guard instructor.

Both trainings are offered through SUNY Canton's Center for Workforce, Community and Industry Partnerships.
