SUNY Canton Assistant Professor Named SUNY Nursing Simulation Fellow
One of the college's resident nursing simulation educators accepted a position with 14 other faculty members to help expand healthcare education across SUNY system.
Canton, NY (11/10/2025) — State University of New York Chancellor John B. King Jr. announced that SUNY Canton Assistant Professor Samantha McCarthy, MSN, RN, has been selected as a SUNY Nursing Fellow for the 2025-2026 academic year in a news release.
"SUNY is at the forefront of innovative academic and professional development models to help train the next generation of nurses and health care professionals," said SUNY Chancellor King. "The SUNY Nursing Simulation Fellowship supports educators from throughout the SUNY System to help generate materials that will provide nursing students with realistic and hands-on experience as part of their coursework. I thank each of our SUNY Nursing Simulation Fellows for stepping up and congratulate them on this well-earned recognition, which will help SUNY accomplish Governor Kathy Hochul's goals to expand New York State's highly skilled health care workforce."
McCarthy was one of the four newest faculty members to be selected to advance SUNY's effort to leverage nursing simulation in licensure programs. She joins 11 returning faculty members from the Fellowship.
"To me, the Fellowship represents collaboration and progress," she said. "I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work alongside some of the most talented professionals SUNY has to offer. This experience will allow us to advance our program and strengthen the practice and preparation of future nursing students."
A North Country native entering her third year at SUNY Canton, McCarthy has become an active member of the campus community. She contributes to multiple committees, assists with recruitment events and campus tours, and supports student life as a faculty athletic mentor.
She began her healthcare career as a Licensed Nursing Assistant at the University of Vermont Medical Center. She went on to earn a Certificate in Practical Nursing and an Associate Degree in Nursing from Vermont Technical College.
The assistant professor launched her professional nursing career at Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans, Vermont, where she worked on the Medical-Surgical Unit before transitioning to the Surgical Services Department. During this time, she earned both her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing degrees from Walden University, specializing in Nursing Informatics.
She returned to the North Country in 2021 to work as a nurse informaticist and to be closer to her family. She joined SUNY Canton after gaining a decade of nursing experience with expertise in medical-surgical nursing, surgical services, clinical documentation integrity, and nursing informatics. She is passionate about advancing nursing education by integrating technology and simulation into competency-based learning.
Outside of the college, Samantha enjoys life on her family's hobby farm with her partner and two active teenagers. She practices yoga regularly and is currently working toward her yoga teacher certification. In her community, she volunteers as an assistant scoutmaster with her local Scouting America Troop.
The SUNY Nursing Simulation Fellowship was developed based on recommendations from the SUNY Future of Healthcare Workforce Task Force to help address the critical healthcare workforce shortage and work towards the Governor's goal of increasing the healthcare workforce in New York State by 20%.
SUNY Canton previously received an $8 million grant as part of an investment to establish the college as one of three SUNY Regional Nursing Simulation Centers, directly supporting increased enrollment in its prelicensure nursing programs.
