SUNY Canton Offers Clinical Medical Assistant Extended Studies Opportunity

Canton, NY (04/17/2019) — SUNY Canton is offering a new three-month non-credit program to prepare participants for professional careers in healthcare settings.

The college's Career Ready Education and Success Training (CREST) Center will host a Clinical Medical Assistant Program, which will be offered beginning May 20. The program includes 140 contact hours and 160 clinical hours. It will run on Monday and Wednesday evenings and alternate Saturdays and is open to any registrant who has or is pursuing a high school diploma or GED.

Medical assistants perform various clinical tasks including assisting with administrating medications and minor procedures, performing electrocardiograms, obtaining laboratory specimens for testing, educating patients, and other related tasks. Job opportunities are prevalent with physician's offices, clinics, chiropractor's offices, hospitals and outpatient treatment facilities.

Alongside the rapid growth in healthcare-related careers, the need for medical assistants is expected to grow 29 percent through 2026, or much faster than average, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics. Students who complete this comprehensive course will be prepared to take the National Healthcareer Association Certified Clinical Medical Assistant national certification examination, which enhances employment opportunities.

In addition to facilitating entry-level clinical medical assistant positions, this course is ideal for students interested in pursuing SUNY Canton's one, two or four-year Nursing programs, or the exceptionally-popular Healthcare Management program.

There are fees associated with this extended studies opportunity, but there is possible tuition assistance available through the New York State Department of Labor for qualifying applicants. The course costs $2,799 and includes the necessary textbooks. There is also an additional $150 fee for the certification examination.
