SUNY Canton Offers Free Solar Training in June

Canton, NY (04/15/2024) — The Center for Workforce, Community & Industry Partnerships (WCIP) at SUNY Canton will host a free informational photovoltaic solar installation course this summer.

Attendees will learn the fundamentals of photovoltaic systems and how to handle and install components safely. The instruction is a partnership between WCIP and the Adirondack North Country Association, with funding support from NYSERDA.

The free training will be held throughout four weekday evenings, followed by an eight-hour weekend lesson. Dates and times are:

Training Section One

  • 5-7 p.m. Monday, June 3
  • 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, June 4
  • 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 5
  • 5-7 p.m. Thursday, June 6
  • 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 8

Training Section Two

  • 5-7 p.m. Monday, June 10

  • 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 15

The course is free and open to the public, and no electrical experience is necessary, according to SUNY Canton Lecturer Nathan M. Havens, who teaches in the Electrical Construction and Maintenance program.

"We will cover fundamental topics including series and parallel circuits, multimeter usage, battery care, conducting site visits, and system layout planning," Havens said. "Much like our college courses, the training is all practical and hands-on, where participants learn by working directly with solar equipment and tools."

Space is limited, and registration is required. Those interested can visit the Solar Training Registration webpage to sign up. For more information, contact WCIP Executive Director Elizabeth A. Brown by phone at 315-386-7504 or email ericksone@canton.edu.
