SUNY Canton Promotes College for Every Student During Campus Visit
Canton, NY (11/01/2022) — Nearly 150 area high school students discovered the SUNY Canton experience through a College for Every Student (CFES) Brilliant Pathways event this week.
"We hosted students from grades 10 through 12 from all over the region as part of our participation in the Rural Postsecondary and Economic Development grant," said Elizabeth A. Brown, assistant dean of the School of Science, Health and Criminal Justice. "The students had the chance to tour our campus and participate in two hands-on workshops based on paths into our signature educational programs."
The visit differed from a traditional college tour because students were allowed to engage in experiential learning scenarios.
Students visiting the Early Childhood program participated in and conducted counting-based exercises designed for young learners. Another group practiced creating wound dressings for animals in the college's Veterinary Technology classrooms. Those interested in the Criminal Justice fields were introduced to GIS mapping and learned about its significance in police investigations.
"The defining characteristic of a SUNY Canton education is the combination of career-focused majors, hands-on learning and overall unique experimentation opportunities," said SUNY Canton Provost Peggy A. De Cooke. "Students had a first-hand glimpse of what they can expect when they come to our college."
Two students from schools miles apart staffed the desk in the college's Sports Management television studio as they read a broadcast of the Kangaroos athletic updates. Across campus, in the college's Canino School of Engineering Technology, students tried out one of the virtual reality rigs and learned about the college's thriving esports program.
CFES Brilliant Pathways creates opportunities for students to forge their own route to a bright future regardless of where they're from, or what resources are available to them. Traditionally, the organization helps provide in-person college visits for students. The program is closely aligned with SUNY Canton's mission as a college that provides access to first-generation, rural or other underserved populations.
Similar experiences will be ongoing, as the college continues its busy fall recruitment and open house season. The next open house available will be held Nov. 12. Guests can take a tour, meet with faculty, see student projects, explore support services, and speak with admissions and financial aid representatives. To register, or find out more, visit the Open House Registration webpage or call (800) 388-7123.
