SUNY Canton's Pauline A. Graveline Honors Convocation Set for April 26

Canton, NY (04/07/2017) — SUNY Canton's annual student award ceremony will recognize a retired provost and faculty member who helped expand the college's global presence.

"I'm pleased to announce that the 2017 Honors Convocation will be named for Associate Provost Emerita Pauline A. Graveline," said SUNY Canton Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Douglas M. Scheidt. "As a faculty member, Pauline helped numerous students launch their careers. As an administrator, she helped broaden the reach of SUNY Canton's academic offerings domestically and overseas."

Honors Convocation will be held at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, in the Roos House Convocation, Athletic and Recreation Center. More than 150 students will receive awards for academic accomplishments at the event.

Honors Convocation is named annually to recognize a faculty member who has served and continue to serve SUNY Canton, its students, and the local community.

Among numerous accomplishments, Graveline played an integral part of SUNY Canton's expansion. She helped to develop the college's international programs and online learning, which became fully staffed and flourishing departments through her leadership. She traveled extensively to expand the reach of the college through the creation of new articulation agreements. The partnerships offered the college's academic programs to students in Russia, Ukraine, China and Japan, among others overseas and domestically. Her outreach efforts inspired the college's SUNY Canton OnLine and Planet Canton marketing efforts.

Graveline coordinated the college's involvement with the SUNY China 150 program. The unique partnership allowed six students from the earthquake-ravaged city of Chengdu in the Sichuan Province of western China to study at SUNY Canton.

"I am particularly proud of all the fantastic faculty and staff that I helped hire and place during my time at the college," Graveline said. "Many of those individuals have continued their careers and become thriving members of the campus community."

Graveline started as a part-time Assistant Professor in the Math Department in 1980. She moved to a full-time position in 1981, was promoted to Associate Professor in 1988, and Professor in 1998. She served as chair of the Faculty Assembly and was an active member of the local and statewide United University Professions union.

She served as the dean of the School of Liberal Studies and Support Services and later as interim provost and vice president for academic affairs. Graveline received the prestigious Excellence in College Service Award in 2006 based on numerous nominations from the faculty and staff she oversaw and her peers. She retired in 2009 and continued on a part-time basis as associate provost for the remainder of the year. She was inducted into the college-wide Hall of Fame in 2016. She is also a generous Canton College Foundation donor.
