SUNY Canton Student Wins Statewide EOP Award
Canton, NY (03/26/2025) — Kylee M. Donnelly, a SUNY Canton Applied Psychology Major from Massena, recently received the Norman R. McConney Jr. Award for Student Excellence, recognizing her exceptional academic performance and perseverance.
The award was given by the State University of New York Board of Trustees and Chancellor John B. King, Jr. to recognize SUNY's Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) students. Donnelly was one of about 50 students recognized at a statewide ceremony.
"I am constantly reminded of the profound impact SUNY's Educational Opportunity Program has had on countless lives," the SUNY Chancellor said. "The stories, triumphs, and unwavering determination of SUNY's EOP students serve as beacons of hope and inspiration for future generations of students."
Donnelly is highly determined and has exceptional listening and communication skills, according to SUNY Canton EOP Program Director Matthew D. McCluskey.
"In my first year as director, I have felt moved by Kylee's professionalism, engagement, and warmth," McCluskey said. "She has a very bright future, and I feel privileged to have been able to join her for a small part of her journey. Kylee is a deeply positive presence in our office and reflects the high hopes of EOP."
Donnelly is a co-founder of the EOP club and an Intern with the SUNY Canton Personal Counseling Center. She's worked as a home health aide in Massena for the last two years. She has received academic honors regularly throughout her time at college, and she is a regular participant in EOP activities.
"Kylee is a hard worker whose grit and determination will serve her well," said EOP Counselor Scott Quinell, who nominated her for the award. "She's always been a hard-working student with great empathy who is willing to help others."
She has a penchant for mental health advocacy, which inspired her to select her major, and she plans to work in a related field after she graduates in May 2025. Her favorite class is Crisis Intervention, and she's said that she believes strongly in supporting others and helping to make a difference in people's lives.
"Kylee is the kind of student noticed by every faculty and staff member she encounters because of her effort and integrity," said Associate Professor & Applied Psychology Department Chair Barat Wolfe. "A quick study and hard worker, Kylee is sure to make us proud after graduation. I can't wait to see her make her mark in the field of mental health."
Donnelly was shocked when a college staff member told her she was receiving the award. She reflected on the words of her late influential EOP tutor, Pamela Bond, who passed away in March 2024.
"I've been told that Pam said I often don't see my potential, but everyone else can, and that I need to believe in myself," Donnelly said. "This award helps me think highly about my time at SUNY Canton and the friends who've helped me achieve my educational goals."
