SUNY Canton Expands Security Guard Training

Canton, NY (03/20/2024) — SUNY Canton has added new sections of its New York State security guard training.

Courses offered through the college's Center for Workforce, Community and Industry Partnerships (WCIP) now include pre-employment training, 90-day on-the-job training, and annual in-service training.

Upcoming sessions include:

  • The 8-hour pre-employment training will be offered from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, and Thursday, May 2, in Dana Hall Room 138.
  • The 8-hour in-service training will be offered from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, and Thursday, May 9, also in Dana Hall Room 138.

Each training costs $75 per person. Participants can register through SUNY Canton's WCIP website.

Former University Police Chief Alan P. Mulkin will present the training sessions. Mulkin, who is currently a lecturer for the Center for Criminal Justice, Intelligence and Cybersecurity, has nearly 40 years of police experience and has worked for about 10 years in the security field.

The college offers this training as a community service outreach for local industries employing security guards. It will now offer training on a continual basis during both the fall and spring semesters. Special sessions will be available for companies who wish to send five or more employees to the training sessions.
