SUNY Canton is Set for 2026-2027 Academic Year
Canton, NY (08/21/2026) — Faculty, staff and college administrators at SUNY Canton are preparing to kick off the fall semester next week.
"SUNY Canton is ready for another outstanding academic year," said SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran. "We look forward to showcasing the completion of several campus enhancements as well as the expanded opportunities now available through SUNY Reconnect, which are only some of the many ways we are continuing to invest in student success. We look forward to welcoming our students back and helping them achieve their educational and career goals."
The college's official Welcome Week begins on Monday, Aug. 24, and new students will begin to move into the residence halls at 8 a.m. Returning students can check into the residence halls beginning at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26. Classes begin on Thursday, Aug. 27.
"Welcome Week is designed to help students feel connected from day one and introduce them to the many services, resources, and opportunities available at SUNY Canton," said Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Courtney Bish. "We want every student to know they have a community here to support them."
Some student-athletes and Educational Opportunity Program students are already back on campus for the fall semester.
Picturesque Plaza
New and returning SUNY Canton students will be welcomed by a newly completed plaza between French Hall and the Richard W. Miller Campus Center. The multi-year renovation project was completed ahead of the fall 2026 semester and includes verdant green spaces arranged in a circle, heated walkways, and an outdoor amphitheater.
According to the college's Director of Facilities, Brian teRiele, the next project will be to renovate a pathway from the Campus Center to Chaney Dining Center, which is expected to begin during the fall. "It will be the final phase of our ongoing project to create a pathway through the heart of our campus that meets Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines for accessibility," teRiele said.
Next summer, the college is planning to replace its turf field used by the soccer and lacrosse teams.
Reconnecting with Students
Earlier this summer, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that SUNY Canton had joined SUNY's Reconnect initiative, expanding access to free higher education for eligible New Yorkers ages 25 to 55 pursuing associate degrees in high-demand fields. The program covers tuition, fees, books, and supplies, enabling adult learners to earn credentials in areas such as nursing, engineering technology programs, construction, automotive technology, computer information systems, and the skilled trades.
SUNY Canton administrators indicated that the initiative aligns with the college's mission to prepare a workforce that meets regional and state-wide employers' needs. State leaders have emphasized the program's role in making college more affordable and helping to strengthen New York's economy.
The college offers admissions opportunities through Welcome Week. Late applicants looking to begin studying during the fall semester should have completed their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
